Research is on to understand the relationship between Type 1 diabetes and dementia

A study has proved that those with Type 1 diabetes has more chance of developing dementia. Type 2 diabetes also give rise to dementia compared to those who doesn’t have diabetes. However, this discovery only proves only an association and doesn’t show that diabetes causes dementia.

Out of all diabetes cases only a maximum of 5% of the cases develop Type 1.

The author of this study, Jennifer Weuve, MPH, ScD, Boston University said that as advances in medical care extended the lives of people with type 1 diabetes it is important to know the relationship between type 1 diabetes and risk of dementia.

“We all know that type 2 diabetes directly linked with dementia but the people must be made aware of the relationship between type 1 diabetes and dementia,” said Weuve.
