Pralhad Joshi takes charge as Union Education Minister, assuming the role on Sunday, a day after Dharmendra Pradhan resigned from the position amid student protests at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi and across the country, according to the Times of India. Pradhan had earlier shared his resignation letter on X, addressing it to his “young friends” and saying he had submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in view of the situation that had unfolded nationwide.
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led protest was later called off after a delegation from the group held talks with Union ministers Jagat Prakash Nadda and Jitendra Singh, with both sides reaching a mutual understanding on the protesters’ key demands, the Times of India reported.
Joshi was born on November 27, 1962, in Bijapur, Karnataka, and completed his schooling in Hubballi, attending Railway School for his primary education before studying at New English School, according to the Times of India. He later graduated with a bachelor’s degree in arts from Shri Kadasiddheshwar Arts College in Hubballi.
Before entering politics full-time, Joshi was associated with business, the Times of India reported. He went on to become a prominent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader in Karnataka and has represented the Dharwad Lok Sabha constituency since 2004, winning five consecutive terms in Parliament.
Over the years, Joshi has held several key organisational and ministerial positions, according to the Times of India. Between 2019 and 2024, he served as Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Mines. Following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he was given the portfolios of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and New and Renewable Energy.
As Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Joshi oversaw several flagship government initiatives, including the National Green Hydrogen Mission, PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, and PM-KUSUM, along with programmes aimed at expanding India’s renewable energy capacity, the Times of India reported.

In a post on X, Shah said the Modi government respects the sentiments of the country’s youth and is committed to implementing reforms against paper leaks, and that Prime Minister Modi’s decisions to ensure strict punishment for those guilty of paper leaks were “commendable.”
Shah credited Pradhan with significant reforms during his tenure, including the effective implementation of the National Education Policy, arrangements for examinations in mother tongues, expansion of PM SHRI Schools, and promotion of digital education and industry-academia coordination, The Hindu reported.
