JSW Group in Talks to Acquire Majority Stake in Volkswagen India Business

📷 JSW Group is reportedly in talks to acquire a majority stake in Volkswagen’s India business.

The JSW Group Volkswagen India deal could see the Sajjan Jindal-led conglomerate take a majority stake in Volkswagen’s India operations, according to a Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the matter. The proposed transaction would bring fresh capital into Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, the unit that oversees the Volkswagen Group’s business in the country, though the two sides have not finalised terms and a deal may not ultimately go through.

Volkswagen has not confirmed the talks directly. A company spokesperson said only that Volkswagen “regularly evaluates opportunities” to support its strategy in India’s passenger vehicle market.

JSW Group Volkswagen India Deal: What We Know

According to Bloomberg, JSW Group is in advanced discussions to acquire a stake in Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, with the proposed structure potentially handing JSW a majority holding in the unit. The report said the investment would inject fresh capital into the business, which manages the Volkswagen Group’s Skoda, Volkswagen and Audi brands in India, along with the luxury and super-luxury marques Porsche, Lamborghini and Bentley.

Both companies are reportedly working to reach an agreement in the coming weeks. However, Bloomberg’s sourcing makes clear this remains a developing situation rather than a done deal.

Deal Terms Are Yet to Be Finalised

The exact terms of the proposed transaction are still being negotiated and could change before any agreement is signed, according to the report. Bloomberg noted explicitly that a transaction may not follow even if talks continue to advance.

Volkswagen has stopped short of confirming that discussions with JSW are taking place. The company’s statement neither denied nor detailed the talks, leaving the scope and structure of any eventual deal unconfirmed.

What the Deal Could Mean for Volkswagen India

If completed, the investment could give Volkswagen access to fresh capital at a time when Skoda Auto Volkswagen India holds a relatively modest position in the country’s crowded passenger vehicle market. FADA data cited by Bloomberg puts the unit’s FY2026 market share at 2.34%, compared with 5.94% for Kia India.

JSW Group’s Growing Presence in India’s Auto Market

A deal would not be JSW Group’s first move into Indian car manufacturing. The conglomerate, which has interests spanning steel, energy, infrastructure and ports, acquired a 35% stake in MG Motor India from China’s SAIC Motor in 2023. That partnership, now operating as JSW MG Motor India, began operations in 2024 and currently holds a 1.40% share of India’s passenger vehicle market, per FADA figures.

A stake in Volkswagen’s India business would represent JSW’s second major push into the country’s automotive sector, extending its footprint beyond MG Motor into a considerably larger and more established operation.

Volkswagen India and JSW Group: What Happens Next

Both companies are said to be aiming to close out negotiations in the coming weeks, but nothing has been finalised. The terms of any transaction remain under discussion, and Bloomberg’s reporting indicates the outcome is not guaranteed.

Confirmation from either Volkswagen or JSW Group is still pending. Until an official announcement is made, the scope, structure and timing of the deal remain unconfirmed.

For now, the situation is best described as an advanced but unconfirmed negotiation: JSW is reportedly pursuing a majority stake in Volkswagen’s India business, Volkswagen has acknowledged only that it evaluates such opportunities, and both sides appear to be working toward a resolution in the near term without a finalised agreement in place.
