The FIFA World Cup will be kicking off from June 12, with a match between co-hosts Mexico taking on South Africa. Other teams present in this group are South Korea and Czech republic.

Now, let’s analyse this group. Group A. Group A consist of co-hosts Mexico, South Africa, South Korea and Czech republic.

Mexico :

Mexico is ranked 15th by latest FIFA ratings. The nation frequently gets the chance of playing in the biggest event of the beautiful game. The players play in the European League on a regular basis. Edson Álvarez, Johan Vásquez, and experienced goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa are some of the names to watch out for. As the co-hosts Mexico will be getting the home advantage with lots of fans to cheer them for. They are the most dominant team in the CONCACAF region having won 15 continental and 10 gold cups so far. However, the team suffers due to lack of consistency and the mental strength especially in the knock out matches. The home support which they will be receiving can break their pre quarter final exit jinx. Also, the fact that majority of the players are young can catapult the nation forward. The team suffers from the fact that there isn’t any long term plan but have short term strategy instead.

South Africa : Hugo Broos has transformed the team to face the global challenges. Broos took charge in 2021 and catapulted the team from a mediocre to global challengers. Discipline, determination and dedication sences prevail in the team now. The players remain like a family as nearly 80% players in the national squad play domestic football. The ability to control the tempo, ball possessing and maintain high intensity are there amongst the current South African footballers. The defence of the team is a rock solid one. They finished third in the 2024 African Cup of Nations. However, the team lack the strength of their reserve bench. Also, the fact that unlike Senegal and Morocco the players doesn’t play in the European league which might deny their International exposure. Majority of the players are young and thereby will be able to bring speed and power to the team. The regional challenges within Africa, last minute planning, over expectations by the fans and competition from other games do invite extra pressure and effect the performance of the team.

South Korea : “Super power of Asia”, South Korea made it a habit of featuring in every world cup since 1986. This nation also played another world cup way back in 1954. The team is unstoppable but lack the rhythm required to play in these high voltage matches. The squad reached the semi finals of the 2002 world cup on their home soil only to be defeated by Turkey in the 3rd and 4th clash. In the last edition of the world cup played in Qatar the team reached the pre-quarter final round at the expense of Uruguay and Ghana. Their magic run ended when Brazil stopped them in the round of 16 with a comprehensive win 4 – 1.

Czech Republic : This nation was formed after a split in Czechoslovakia. Although the nation has reduced in terms of area, population and other infrastructures its national football team can cause upsets on their given day. The team caused a big upset by eliminating teams like Republic of Ireland and Denmark in the path of qualification for the world cup. Both the wins (against Ireland and Denmark) came via Tie-breakers which is the penalty shootout. This prove that Czech Republic don’t panic and press the No – confidence button so easily.
