Vodacom has partnered with AWS and the University of Johannesburg (UJ) to strengthen AI and data science skills in South Africa, as part of a new Vodacom AWS AI partnership South Africa initiative announced on 27 July 2026, according to BusinessTech.
The three-way collaboration brings together industry, academia and cloud technology to give students hands-on experience solving real-world AI problems, Vodacom said. The programme will run through UJ’s School of Consumer Intelligence and Information Systems, specifically its Centre for Applied Data Science, and will support co-designed learning programmes, postgraduate research and industry mentorship.
Vodacom said the goal of the AI partnership is to build a sustainable pipeline of AI talent capable of developing practical solutions for businesses and society more broadly.
“This partnership reflects Vodacom’s commitment to building a future-ready AI talent ecosystem,” Vodacom Group Chief Executive Officer Shameel Joosub said. He added that the collaboration creates “a direct pathway from university research to industry impact, where students work on real AI use cases and emerge ready to practise.”
Joosub said the initiative is ultimately about developing the next generation of AI professionals who can help drive business growth and shape Africa’s digital future.
UJ College of Business and Economics Executive Dean Tankiso Moloi said the partnership would strengthen AI expertise at both a national and continental level. “For UJ, the value of university-industry partnerships lies in what they make possible over time: deeper research capacity, stronger talent development and an ecosystem that connects African expertise with African opportunities,” Moloi said.
Under the partnership, master’s students at UJ’s Centre for Applied Data Science are already conducting research aligned with Vodacom’s priorities. One focus area is autonomous AI systems designed to detect, analyse and respond to cyber threats within telecommunications networks. A second line of research involves blockchain-based methods for strengthening digital identity management and preventing identity theft.
Vodacom said these focus areas reflect the partnership’s broader goal of tackling practical digital challenges while developing scarce AI skills domestically.
AWS is providing the technical backbone for the initiative, giving students and researchers access to cloud, data and AI tools including Amazon Bedrock, Amazon QuickSight and Amazon Kinesis , services the company said are used globally to support research and development work.
“Through access to advanced tools, platforms, and computing resources, students can experiment, build, and test AI solutions in real-world environments, accelerating innovation and enhancing the practical impact of their work,” Vodacom said in a statement.
AWS Telco Africa Lead Prabashni Naidoo said access to technology is central to unlocking innovation. She said the collaboration would give students and researchers access to what she described as world-class cloud and AI capabilities, which she said would empower them to turn research into practical solutions with impact across the continent.

The Vodacom AWS AI partnership South Africa comes as demand for AI and data science expertise continues to outpace supply across the country’s technology and telecommunications sectors. Neither Vodacom nor AWS disclosed the financial terms of the partnership or a specific timeline for its rollout, and the companies have not yet said how many students will take part or when the first research outcomes will be published.
The initiative adds to a wider pattern of international partnerships aimed at strengthening economic and technological capacity, a trend also visible in other markets, such as Pakistan’s recent $10 billion US stabilization facility.
