The EPF interest credit for the financial year 2025-26 was expected to reflect in subscriber accounts from July 15, 2026, after the government approved an 8.25% interest rate on Employees’ Provident Fund contributions, according to ET Online. Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya had said the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) would process the interest credit for around 34 crore member accounts, with many subscribers expected to see their updated balances by that date. The Finance Ministry has approved the 8.25% rate for FY 2025-26, the report said.
Once credited by the EPFO, the interest reflects directly in a subscriber’s EPF balance, and members can verify whether the EPF interest credit has come through using several official channels: the UMANG app, the EPFO Member e-Sewa portal, a missed call service, an SMS service, or the Passbook Lite feature on the EPFO Member Passbook portal, according to ET Online.
To check the balance through Passbook Lite, subscribers need to visit the EPFO Member Passbook portal and log in using their Universal Account Number (UAN), password and captcha. After verifying a one-time password sent to their Aadhaar-linked mobile number, users can click “View” and select “Passbook Lite” to see recent contributions, withdrawals and their updated balance, the report said.
For members who prefer SMS-based verification, UAN-activated subscribers can send a message in the format “EPFOHO UAN” to 7738299899 from their registered mobile number to receive details of their latest PF contribution, balance and KYC status. According to ET Online, this SMS service is available in ten languages, making it accessible to a wider base of subscribers across the country.
The UMANG app offers another route for checking the EPF interest credit status. Subscribers can download the app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and log in using their UAN. Once the account is linked, users can view their PF balance, track contributions, raise claims and check pension account transactions for the last three months, with the option to download a detailed account statement as a PDF, the report said.
ET Online also addressed a common concern among subscribers: whether a delay in crediting interest results in any financial loss. According to the report, subscribers do not lose any interest even if the credit is delayed, since interest is calculated on the monthly running balance under Paragraph 60 of the EPF Scheme, 1952. This means the applicable interest accrues through the year regardless of when the actual credit entry appears in a member’s passbook.
The EPF interest rate is reviewed annually by the Central Board of Trustees of the EPFO and requires subsequent approval from the Finance Ministry before being credited to subscriber accounts. Rate decisions and related circulars are typically published through the Ministry of Labour and Employment, which oversees the EPFO’s functioning. Subscribers with queries about their account status or discrepancies in the credited amount are advised to raise grievances through the official EPFO portal rather than relying on unverified sources.
The EPF interest credit update comes at a time when several other corporate and industry developments are also making headlines in India’s business landscape, including the recently reported JSW Group–Volkswagen India deal. With the interest now expected to be visible for the large majority of the EPFO’s 34 crore member accounts, subscribers who have not yet seen the updated balance are advised to check through the official channels listed above before raising a formal query. No further announcement on additional processing timelines has been reported at this stage.
