Qatar leads mediation push
NPR reports that Qatar has been conducting intense mediation efforts over the past 72 hours. The aim is to head off a new round of possible U.S. attacks on Iran after Tuesday’s midterm elections in the United States.
The summit in Qatar brings regional leaders together around that diplomatic effort, which is focused on keeping the conflict from widening again.
A region on edge
According to NPR, the uncertainty over what could follow the U.S. vote has put the entire Gulf region on edge. The timing of the mediation, tied directly to the days after Tuesday’s elections, shows how closely the region is watching for any shift in Washington’s approach toward Tehran.
The NPR report is brief and gives no further detail on who attended the meeting or what proposals are being discussed.
