Manchester United are one point and one place outside the Premier League relegation zone after a 2-0 defeat at Chelsea and a Coventry City victory, Al Jazeera reports.

Coventry beat Sunderland 3-1 at home and moved above United. The result leaves the joint record Premier League winners in a precarious position early in the season.

Ten-man United beaten at Stamford Bridge

United played much of the match with ten men. Lisandro Martinez received a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Wesley Fofana during an aerial duel from a corner.

Al Jazeera says United showed an improved performance in the first half. Recalled captain Bruno Fernandes missed one of several good chances. Chelsea then took control, with Morgan Rogers scoring a solo goal and Cole Palmer converting a penalty.

The defeat extends United’s winless league run to nine matches, their longest since 1986. It also continues their worst start to a league season in 40 years.

A struggling season for a 20-time champion

United have won only once in nine league games. Across all competitions, they have two wins from 13 matches. Those came against promoted Ipswich in the Premier League and tournament newcomer Sabah in the Champions League.

The 20-time English champions could be in the bottom three by the end of Matchweek 9. Only Nottingham Forest’s 2-0 defeat at Brentford kept United out of the drop zone on Saturday.

The final league game of the day, Crystal Palace at Tottenham, could still push them down. A point for Palace would send United into the bottom three.

Pressure grows on Carrick

The pressure is building on manager Michael Carrick, who is in his first full season in charge. The next test is a home Champions League match against Roma on Tuesday, and Al Jazeera notes there are doubts over whether Carrick will still be in charge.

Carrick said he expects to be in the dugout for that tie. He described the two halves against Chelsea as being far apart. “We looked in a good place going into half-time and then found a way of unravelling it second half,” he said.

Forward Bryan Mbeumo pointed to the early part of the match. He said the mentality was right from the first minute and that the team missed chances that could have put them ahead. “We still trust everyone,” he said.
