Police in Paris fired tear gas and clashed with protesters on the weekend as France saw a third straight round of nationwide demonstrations against the rising cost of living and poor public services, according to BBC World. The country is now preparing for a general strike in the coming days.

Large crowds across France
France’s interior ministry says more than 320,000 people took to the streets around the country. At least 290 protesters were arrested, the ministry said.
In the capital, police say about 70,000 people demonstrated. The clashes with officers and the use of tear gas marked the day in Paris.
The BBC reports that hundreds of thousands of people took part in the protests nationwide.
Authorities aim to avoid repeat of earlier violence
The authorities made extensive preparations for the weekend. Their goal was to avoid a repeat of the violence, rioting and looting that took place two weeks ago, according to the BBC.
The latest demonstrations were the third consecutive weekend of protests across the country. Demonstrators are targeting the rising cost of living and what they describe as poor public services.
Protests spread beyond France
Demonstrations were not limited to France. Protests also took place in Albania, Germany and Italy. The BBC’s correspondent James Waterhouse reports that young people are taking to the streets across Europe.
With a general strike expected in France in the coming days, attention now turns to whether the protests will continue to grow in the country and elsewhere on the continent.
