15 Indian tourists were killed after a speedboat carrying Indian visitors capsized near Phu Quoc Island in southern Vietnam on Saturday. Local authorities told the Associated Press (AP) that the boat was carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members when the accident occurred. Twenty-one people were rescued, while authorities continued search and rescue operations.

How the Vietnam Speedboat Accident Happened

The speedboat was traveling from Hon May Rut Ngoai Island , about 10km south of Phu Quoc , to An Thoi Port when it capsized roughly 400 metres from shore. Of the 15 who died, 13 were men and two were women. The cause remains under investigation, though Vietnamese media reported rough sea conditions in the area at the time.

Vietnam’s PM Orders Urgent Investigation

Vietnam’s Prime Minister called for urgent measures on July 11, expressing condolences to victims’ families and directing ministries and local authorities to mobilize medical resources to treat the injured and minimize further loss. An Giang Province, which oversees the island, was tasked with leading the investigation into the cause and addressing any shortcomings. The Ministry of Public Security was directed to investigate the cause of the accident and take action against anyone found responsible for safety violations.

Indian Embassy Confirms Incident, Releases Victim List

The Indian Embassy in Vietnam confirmed the capsizing and said search and rescue operations by local authorities were launched immediately. Later that day, the embassy released a list of all 32 Indian citizens who had been aboard , 30 men and two women.

“In a tragic incident, a boat carrying several Indian tourists has capsized near Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam a few hours ago. Exact details of the incident are being ascertained as search and rescue operations by local authorities are ongoing,” the embassy said.

Control Rooms Set Up for Families

To assist affected families, the Indian Embassy has set up emergency control rooms at the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City and the Embassy of India in Hanoi, providing information and support to relatives.

The incident comes less than a year after the Wonder Sea tourist boat capsized in Ha Long Bay, killing 39 people in one of Vietnam’s deadliest recent maritime disasters.
